How to recognize quality matcha? 5 things to look for

Over the past months I've prepared thousands of matcha drinks, and now I'll share everything I've learned.

SORAMI tea leaf - quality ceremonial matcha

Quality matcha powder is essential. Even the best preparation can't hide subpar matcha. Almost everyone calls their matcha "ceremonial", which means absolutely nothing.

So how to find quality matcha?

When buying matcha, look for these 5 things that indicate you're buying quality and the seller knows what they're talking about 🙂

Matcha powder quality test - comparing different matcha qualities

    1. Country and region of origin

    Ideally Japan.

    2. Packaging

If it's in a transparent container, run away. Light destroys matcha.

    3. Harvest

The highest quality matcha comes from the spring/first harvest, because that's when the tea leaves are finest and the taste is more intense.

    4. Processing method

The gold standard is stone grinding. The finest powder and texture. If they don't mention it, it was probably ground mechanically.

    5. Bonus: Hand-picked and freshly ground

Many of you will notice this difference.
